The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has taken action against three online gambling companies that were operating illegally in the state. The regulator issued cease-and-desist letters to the companies, which were based in the US and overseas, and ordered them to stop offering their games to Michigan residents.
MGCB Enforces Online Gaming Laws
The MGCB is responsible for regulating the online gaming and sports betting industry in Michigan, which was legalized in December 2020. The regulator has issued licenses to authorized operators, who must comply with strict standards and pay taxes to the state. The licensed operators also provide consumer protection and responsible gaming measures.
However, some unlicensed operators have tried to circumvent the law and offer their games to Michigan consumers without obtaining a license. This poses a risk to the consumers, who may not have any recourse if they encounter any issues or disputes with the unregulated sites. Moreover, the illegal operators deprive the state of essential funding that could benefit education, health care, and other public services.
Three Companies Ordered to Stop
The MGCB identified three online gambling companies that were violating the Lawful Internet Gaming Act by conducting internet gaming without a license. The companies were:
- PredictionStrike, based in New York, which offered a platform where users could buy and sell shares of professional athletes based on their performance.
- VGW LuckyLand, based in San Francisco, which offered online sweepstakes games that resembled slot machines and bingo.
- Sweepstakes Limited, based in Cyprus, which operated several websites that offered online casino games and sports betting.
The MGCB sent cease-and-desist letters to the companies in late 2023, after conducting investigations and working with the Department of Attorney General. The letters warned the companies that they were breaking the law and that they could face legal action if they did not stop their operations in Michigan.
Michigan Consumers Advised to Play Responsibly
The MGCB urged Michigan consumers to play only on licensed and regulated online gaming and sports betting sites, which can be verified on the regulator’s website. The regulator also advised consumers to be wary of any online gaming offers that seem too good to be true, such as free money, bonuses, or prizes.
The MGCB also reminded consumers to play responsibly and set limits on their time and money spent on online gaming. The regulator provides various resources and tools to help consumers manage their gaming behavior and prevent problem gambling.
