The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has announced the creation of a new institute dedicated to the Chinese language and culture, made possible by a generous $15 million donation from Las Vegas Sands Corp.
This groundbreaking initiative, known as the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture, was officially approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents during their meeting last Thursday. The institute will serve as a hub for academic programs, cultural studies, and language courses focused on China, and is set to play a key role in strengthening the university’s global presence and expanding its international offerings.
A New Era of Global Education
The Sands Institute marks a significant step for both UNLV and the Las Vegas Sands Corp., reflecting a deeper commitment to enhancing educational ties between Nevada and China. The donation comes at a time when the demand for Chinese language and cultural education is on the rise, especially given the growing influence of China on the global stage.
“This is an exciting moment for UNLV,” said Dr. John R. Sperling, President of the University. “The Sands Institute will provide students with invaluable opportunities to immerse themselves in Chinese language, history, and culture, which will be an asset in any global career.”
The institute will offer a wide range of courses, from beginner-level Chinese language classes to more advanced studies in Chinese history, business practices, and cultural traditions. Plans for faculty recruitment and the development of various programs are already underway, with the goal of launching classes as soon as possible.
Sands’ Role in Global Education and Culture
Las Vegas Sands, which operates some of the most iconic resorts in Macau, including the Venetian Macao, has long been a champion of fostering greater understanding between China and the U.S. Since opening its first property in Macau in 2004, the company has recognized the importance of cultural exchange and has been a strong advocate for promoting Chinese culture globally.
“We’ve always viewed our role in Macau as not just a business opportunity, but as a chance to foster mutual understanding between the East and West,” said Sheldon Adelson, CEO of Las Vegas Sands. “The Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture is an extension of that mission, and we’re proud to support this initiative.”
This partnership between the Sands Corporation and UNLV comes as part of a broader trend of universities across the United States expanding their offerings related to China. With China being one of the world’s most important economic and cultural powers, academic institutions are increasingly recognizing the importance of preparing students for careers that require an understanding of Chinese language and culture.
Cultural Exchange and Global Careers
The Sands Institute will not only serve as a classroom for Chinese language and culture but will also provide students with practical, real-world applications of their studies. The curriculum will be designed to integrate business and cultural skills, ensuring that students graduate with a well-rounded understanding of China’s growing influence in both the global economy and international relations.
For students, this represents a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of one of the world’s oldest civilizations while preparing for careers in a range of industries—from international business to diplomacy and beyond. The institute will also explore avenues for collaboration with Chinese universities and cultural organizations to enhance student experiences.
“By fostering a deeper understanding of China, we’re preparing the next generation of leaders and professionals to work in a global economy that increasingly demands cross-cultural fluency,” said Dr. Sperling.
Expanding UNLV’s International Footprint
The establishment of the Sands Institute also reflects UNLV’s ongoing effort to expand its international footprint. The university has steadily increased its focus on global education in recent years, offering more opportunities for students to study abroad, take part in international internships, and engage in global research.
With the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture, UNLV is taking another giant leap in positioning itself as a leading institution for global studies. The institute will contribute to the university’s commitment to preparing students to thrive in an interconnected world.
The addition of this institute is expected to bolster UNLV’s reputation as a hub for international education and research, attracting students, scholars, and professionals interested in Chinese studies and fostering deeper academic collaborations between the U.S. and China.
