Australians have long been known for their enthusiasm in gambling, but a recent study by Roy Morgan reveals a concerning trend. Problem gamblers, constituting only 10% of the total gambling population, contribute a staggering 34% of the total value of bets placed through regulated websites.

The Vulnerability of Problem Gamblers

The Alliance for Gambling Reform, a not-for-profit organization advocating for stricter gambling regulations and consumer protections, released these findings. According to the study, approximately 337,000 Australians fall into the category of problem gamblers. Despite their relatively small numbers, they wield significant influence over the betting landscape.

Predatory Industry Practices

Martin Thomas, the Interim Chief Executive of the Alliance for Gambling Reform, expressed concern about the normalization of gambling, especially online. He highlighted the industry’s aggressive advertising tactics, which bombard screens with over a million gambling ads annually. Thomas emphasized that the online gambling industry is “grooming” children and young people, creating a high-risk environment.

A Call for Action

Australia has taken steps to address problem gambling, including the successful BetStop national self-exclusion program and the prohibition of credit card use for gambling. However, the country must continue its efforts to protect vulnerable gamblers and prevent further harm.
