In a significant development, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation (DETR) has stepped up to support the thousands of employees impacted by the impending closure of The Mirage casino-resort. The closure, scheduled for July 17, is part of a comprehensive renovation plan that will transform the iconic property into the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas.

The Mirage Closure and Its Impact

The Mirage, a well-known fixture on the Las Vegas Strip, has decided to temporarily shut its doors to undergo extensive renovations. As a result, 3,350 employees will be affected by the closure. The WARN Act notice filed with Nevada DETR highlights the scale of this workforce disruption.

Nevada DETR’s rapid response program aims to provide essential services and resources to affected employees during this transition. DETR Director Christopher Sewell emphasized the importance of supporting The Mirage staff during this challenging period. The program will offer a customized schedule of workshops, job fairs, and informational sessions to help employees transition into new roles. Here are some key aspects of the assistance provided:

  1. Information and Budget Planning: Employees will receive guidance on budget planning to manage their finances effectively.
  2. Health Insurance Options: DETR will assist employees in exploring health insurance options.
  3. Job Training: Access to job training programs will be available to enhance employability.
  4. Job Search Assistance: DETR will facilitate job search efforts by connecting employees with potential employers.
  5. On-Site and Virtual Services: Services will be accessible both on-site and virtually, ensuring flexibility for employees.

Severance Packages and Future Opportunities

Eligible union and non-union employees who remain with The Mirage until the closure date will receive approximately $80 million in severance packages. Additionally, The Mirage plans to host hiring events in collaboration with other employers in the Las Vegas valley. The resort’s reopening is targeted for spring 2027, marking a nearly three-year hiatus.

As The Mirage prepares for its transformation, Nevada DETR’s commitment to supporting affected employees remains unwavering. By providing essential resources and fostering connections with new opportunities, DETR aims to ease the transition for those impacted by the closure.
