Replacing a longtime leader is never easy, but Dallas McCready is ready to take on the challenge. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) has officially named him as its new President and CEO, filling the shoes of Patrick Daigle, who is retiring after 27 years with the company.
Internal Talent Wins Out in CEO Search
McCready wasn’t plucked from outside the organization. In fact, he’s been with Atlantic Lottery since 2022, serving as Chief Strategy Officer. His background in both gaming and government, including time as a Deputy Minister in New Brunswick, made him a strong contender.
Atlantic Lottery’s Board of Directors, chaired by Sean O’Connor, believes the right choice was already in-house. O’Connor noted that McCready’s experience, particularly his leadership in crafting the company’s latest five-year strategic plan, positions him well to guide ALC into the future.
The selection process wasn’t a quick one. A recruitment firm, Royer Thompson, was hired to conduct an international search. Over 120 applicants were considered, but ultimately, the board felt McCready was the best fit.
A Competitive Market Awaits
McCready is stepping in at a pivotal time. Gambling competition in Canada is only growing, and ALC needs to keep pace with emerging trends and challenges.
In a statement, McCready highlighted ALC’s ability to “punch above its weight” and emphasized the corporation’s ongoing focus on responsible gambling. He also made it clear that despite increasing competition, ALC is committed to staying ahead in the sector.
The numbers show there’s plenty at stake. According to ALC’s latest annual report, the corporation delivered CA$487 million to the four Atlantic provinces in the 2023-24 fiscal year. That included:
- New Brunswick: CA$151.2 million
- Nova Scotia: CA$161.7 million
- Prince Edward Island: CA$26.8 million
- Newfoundland and Labrador: CA$147.3 million
The bulk of revenue—CA$256.5 million—came from video lottery terminals (Destination line of business), while CA$230.5 million was generated from retail and online lottery sales.
Online Lottery Growth Continues
One area showing notable expansion is Atlantic Lottery’s online platform. The alc.ca iLottery segment saw a 17% revenue increase compared to the previous year.
This growth reflects a broader industry trend, as more players shift toward digital gaming options. ALC has been investing heavily in its online presence, ensuring its platform remains competitive in an increasingly digital marketplace.
What’s Next for McCready?
McCready takes over at a moment when ALC must balance tradition with innovation. The company has long been a major source of funding for Atlantic Canada, and ensuring a steady revenue stream while adapting to market shifts will be his top priority.
With a strong track record in strategy and government, he seems well-equipped for the job. But the industry is evolving fast, and he’ll need to make quick, smart moves to keep Atlantic Lottery at the top.
