The Cosmic Upright Became Light & Wonder’s Quiet Floor Engine

Light & Wonder’s Cosmic Upright is still arriving on casino floors, including a VIP bank installed in Buenos Aires on September 22. The box Brett Colbert called a workhorse in March 2025 now sits under a wider Cosmic family, and operators keep taking it because it fits a standard 28-inch slot base.

Colbert, then director of product management, said players liked the cabinet and that the company was putting it in everywhere. The second effect of that pitch is easier to see now. The screen sells the photo. The base, the shared tracker mount, and a thin list of known brands are what get a purchase order signed.

A 28-Inch Base Carries a 49-Inch Screen

Light & Wonder’s own product page calls the largest 4K screen on an L&W upright a 49-inch main display, paired with a 27-inch upper screen. Fiber optic edge lighting runs the full height and reacts when a bonus hits. Colbert called that lighting a subtle complement, with color that can travel up, down, or spin. He said it glows in darker high-limit rooms and that the cabinet stands about 6-foot-8 on the main floor.

Zach Mossman, director of global product management, walked the hardware in an October 2024 company video before G2E. He said the bigger screens still drop onto a 28-inch standard slot base, matching the height of the Kascada line, with a 28-inch total depth. The iDeck detaches from the core. Dual Halo bet buttons sit under GG3 glass. Locks and interior parts face the tech, not the aisle.

That is the operator argument, and it is blander than the lighting demo. A portrait box that needs a custom base loses banks. A box that reuses the TwinStar J43 and Kascada player-tracking mount does not. European write-ups of the first EMEA units also noted an inductive charging pad in the iDeck and dual bash buttons.

WHAT FLOOR TECHS ACTUALLY GET

• Slot base: Universal fit on a 28-inch standard base, so banks do not have to be recut.
• Cabinet depth: 28 inches front to back, which keeps the aisle closer to older uprights.
• Service core: Forward locks, interior access, and an iDeck that comes off in pieces rather than as a sealed slab.
• Tracker mount: The same player-tracking mount used on TwinStar J43 and Kascada, with no special kit.
• Audio pack: A sound bar over the iDeck and a subwoofer in the base, plus a new sign package for pods or in-line banks.

Mexico production was expanded in 2025 to feed Cosmic and Cosmic Upright demand in Canada and Mexico, Light & Wonder said on its second-quarter 2025 call. Hardware that is easy to build and easy to open is hardware a plant can run at volume.

The 2023 Cosmic Slant Set This Path

The upright is the standing twin of the Cosmic slant-top Light & Wonder put out in 2023. That slant used the same 49-inch curved panel and 27-inch topper idea, with edge lighting down to the skirt. Matt Wilson, president and chief executive, told investors in late 2024 that Cosmic Portrait had been the number one cabinet in the market for about a year, and that Cosmic Upright would launch late in the fourth quarter and build into 2025.

THE COSMIC UPRIGHT ROLLOUT

1. October 7-10, 2024: Cosmic Upright debuts at G2E in Las Vegas on the back of the Cosmic slant.
2. November 2024: Soft launch begins in North America.
3. January 20-22, 2025: The cabinet makes its ICE Barcelona debut with a dedicated franchise library.
4. February 21, 2025: Ultimate Fire Link Triple Nova, the third premium title for the box, debuts at El Cortez in Las Vegas.
5. April 3, 2025: First EMEA install goes in at Casino Larmor-Plage in France.
6. October 7-9, 2025: G2E 2025 adds LightWave, Cosmic Dual, and Cosmic Sky around the same lighting family.
7. May 21, 2026: Cosmic Dual goes live in Australia, starting at Ballina RSL Club.
8. September 22, 2026: Casino Buenos Aires installs eight Cosmic Uprights in its VIP sector.

Wayne Ellard, managing director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, told trade interviewers at ICE that EMEA orders were open for a second-quarter 2025 rollout, starting with four titles from Dancing Drums, Invaders, Ultimate Fire Link, and Huff N’ Puff. Emmanuel Briand, director general at Kasino Larmor-Plage, said his floor was the first in the region to take the cabinet and that guests responded to the design and the games.

Fire Link and Huff N’ Puff Paid the Rent

Colbert said the launch plan was extensions of the company’s best brands, with known mechanics and new features. Premium titles on the upright included Ultimate Fire Link Triple Nova, Dancing Drums Link, and Invaders Attack Again From The Planet Moolah. For-sale units opened with seven titles across five families. Huff N’ Puff Highrise was on the factory launch list. Huff N’ Puff We’ve Had Enuff followed later in 2025, letting players win mansions and hit the bonus wheel from the base game.

ICE 2025 put 34 game families across five cabinets, and Cosmic Upright’s slice of that stand was not a pile of new intellectual property. Light & Wonder’s January 15, 2025 release named Huff N’ Puff Highrise, Dancing Drums Link, and Ultimate Fire Link Triple Nova as the dedicated launch library. A week before Super Bowl Sunday in 2025, for-sale games for the cabinet went out at Harrah’s New Orleans.

Nathan Drane, chief product officer, said in October 2025 that Piggy Bankin’ Break In was the first new Piggy Bankin’ title in 10 years, and that it was built for the Cosmic Upright. Eilers-Fantini’s November 2025 cabinet report later listed that game as a top Core performer on the same hardware, while Ultimate Fire Link Triple Nova sat at the top of the Premium rankings. The box did not invent those brands. It gave them a portrait they could occupy without a custom island.

Colbert still put content first. He said the cabinet was designed from the ground up, launched with the best brands, and would get new themes and new mechanics, and that the mix was the part that mattered. That is a software story wearing a hardware skin. Once a bank is on the floor, conversion kits are cheaper than ripping out steel.

Premium Units Have Grown for 24 Quarters

Eilers-Fantini’s April 2025 cabinet report ranked Cosmic Upright first in the Portrait Upright category. The same report said the cabinet opened as the top indexing cabinet in Western Europe, where Light & Wonder led suppliers with more than 27 percent of casino GGR. By November 2025, the same research house had Cosmic Upright at number 2 among new cabinets, with those Fire Link and Piggy Bankin’ results sitting on top of the game lists.

Company results then named the upright in the same breath as newer steel. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Light & Wonder said growth was fueled by strong launches of Cosmic Upright and LightWave, and that North America shipped 7,000 game-sale units for $234 million in that quarter. Those shipment counts are for the whole sales channel, not for Cosmic Upright alone.

Q2 2026 GAMING SNAPSHOT

• Gaming revenue: $554 million, up 5 percent from the year-earlier quarter.
• Gaming operations: Up $38 million, or 18 percent, with the North American gaming-ops fleet at 36,068 units.
• Premium mix: 58 percent of the North American installed base, after a 24th straight quarter of premium growth.
• Total NA units: 48,639 including more than 12,550 Grover charitable units, up 5 percent from 46,368.

Light & Wonder said the premium installed base grew for 24 quarters, adding 652 premium units in the quarter and more than 2,550 year over year. Net income was $120 million, up 26 percent. Consolidated adjusted EBITDA was $383 million, up 9 percent. Management pointed to Cosmic, Cosmic Upright, LightWave, and LightWave Solar as the cabinets carrying that mix. It also said game sales would pick up in the second half, with third-quarter global shipments guided at 8,500 to 9,000 units.

A workhorse, in this accounting, is a cabinet the earnings letter can still mention after the next cabinet has already been unveiled.

Cosmic Dual and Cosmic Sky Followed the Upright

G2E 2025, held October 7-9 in Las Vegas, was where Light & Wonder showed LightWave and two new Cosmic models on the same stand. Cosmic Dual uses two 27-inch HD screens and an optional topper for mixed global floors. Cosmic Sky stacks two 55-inch Ultra HD curved screens as a jumbo canvas. LightWave ties machine LCDs to micro-LED surrounds so a bank reads as one picture from across the room.

Drane said Cosmic Sky was the next iteration of the jumbo idea, taking Cosmic’s lighting DNA and giving it the Mural-style canvas. Launch talk around Sky leaned on cinematic titles. Dual’s Australian debut in May 2026 opened with the Jin Chan family at Ballina RSL, then more clubs in New South Wales and Queensland. Ben Frederiksen, managing director for Australia and New Zealand, called Dual a modular product for operators who already knew the Cosmic look.

HOW THE COSMIC FAMILY SPLITS THE FLOOR

Eilers-Fantini’s July 2026 U.S. and Canada report had Cosmic Sky debuting at number 7 among new premium cabinets. That is a different list from the upright’s portrait win in 2025. The point of the table is the split. Sky and LightWave take the photos. Dual takes mixed rooms. The upright remains the box you can drop on a base the building already has.

ICE 2026 materials from Light & Wonder still put titles on Cosmic and Cosmic Upright in the Barcelona stand, next to Dual’s regional debut. The older upright did not leave the catalog when the taller screens arrived.

Aristocrat Reclaimed the Manufacturer Ranking

None of this made Light & Wonder the survey leader in 2025. J.P. Morgan’s 16th annual slot survey found that 54 percent named Aristocrat the top performer over 2025, after Light & Wonder had 67 percent of that vote for 2024. Weighted average scores were 4.4 for Aristocrat and 4.1 for Light & Wonder. On floor-share gains, 63 percent of respondents (about 70 percent of machines in the sample) said Aristocrat was taking the most space; 23 percent said Light & Wonder (about 17 percent of machines). Asked to build a new floor, respondents gave Aristocrat 47 percent of the slots and Light & Wonder 23 percent.

Those figures measure manufacturers, not a single portrait upright. They also explain why G2E 2026, which opens September 28 in Las Vegas and runs through October 1, will not be a Cosmic Upright coming-out party. Aristocrat launched its Reign cabinet in August 2026 and is taking Reign Double and Reign Single to the show, with Baron Slant and Baron Portrait still adding titles. Light & Wonder’s own preview for the week leans on LightWave Solar and newer boxes, plus licensed games, while Cosmic Upright stays in the installed mix.

The ranking fight and the upright’s category win can both be true. Aristocrat is winning more of the overall vote. Light & Wonder still has a portrait box that Eilers had at the top of its class, and a premium leased fleet that has grown for 24 quarters. Operators can prefer Aristocrat in a survey and still order a Cosmic Upright for a 28-inch hole on the floor.

Eight New Uprights Went Into a Buenos Aires VIP Room

Casino Buenos Aires, posting from its official account on September 22, said eight new Light & Wonder Cosmic Uprights were waiting on the fourth level in Sector VIP on the Buque Estrella. That is a high-limit room, which is the setting Colbert flagged when he talked about fiber optic lighting against a darker carpet.

A VIP bank of eight does not prove a global install total. It does show the order book did not freeze when Cosmic Sky and LightWave took the booth. High-limit hosts still want a tall portrait that glows. Main-floor buyers still want a 28-inch base. Both groups get the same Fire Link and Huff N’ Puff sequels, which is the lock-in that makes a workhorse worth stocking.

G2E opens September 28 with newer Light & Wonder steel under the lights. The Cosmic Upright’s job that week is the same job it has had since the November 2024 soft launch: occupy a standard footprint, light the edges when the bonus hits, and keep a known brand in the chair.
