Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe’s Reno Now Outruns Its Deadline

Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe still has a hotel tower under construction, after its general manager told Nevada regulators the whole job would wrap by early 2026. Heavenly Tower is now due in spring 2027, with a 1,900-square-foot presidential suite still on the plans.

That delay lands in the same week Caesars Entertainment shareholders approved Tilman Fertitta’s $17.6 billion buyout, a deal that would put three of Stateline’s four casinos under one owner.

Fertitta’s Tahoe Calendar Has Already Slipped

Jason Sides, general manager of the 539-room hotel-casino at 50 Highway 50, laid out a tight clock to the Nevada Gaming Control Board in July 2024. Saltgrass Steak House would open in September. The first doors in a closed tower would come back in October. Later phases would touch basically every square foot, and the work would be done by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

He also told the board that fall 2023 and spring 2024 had been slow, then business had surged in the weeks before that hearing. Fertitta Entertainment had closed the purchase from Paragon Gaming in August 2023 and stripped the Hard Rock name within 30 days. The cash came first from Fertitta entities, then a Deutsche Bank term loan taken by the landowner to pay those entities back. The board recommended that the Nevada Gaming Commission clear the related equity pledges.

Sides did not put a dollar figure on the rebuild. At the August 2023 commission meeting, member Brian Krolicki, who lives in the Tahoe area, called the arrival “a $227 million capital infusion” for a small community. That remark described the deal as he saw it, not a published renovation budget.

THE RENO CALENDAR SIDES GAVE THE BOARD

1. March 2023: Fertitta Entertainment announces it will buy Hard Rock Lake Tahoe and run it as a Golden Nugget.
2. August 2023: The Nevada Gaming Commission approves the sale, with a rebrand due in 30 days.
3. July 2024: Sides tells the Control Board Saltgrass opens in September, tower doors return in October, and the job wraps by early 2026.
4. December 2025: Sunset Tower’s room redo is finished and several public rooms reopen.
5. May 14, 2026: Mastro’s Steakhouse opens to the public.
6. Spring 2027: Heavenly Tower is now scheduled to wrap, including the presidential suite.

Fertitta, owner of Fertitta Entertainment and the Houston Rockets, said at the 2023 announcement that the purchase was “a significant opportunity for us to expand our footprint into the Northern Nevada marketplace.” Three years later, the small Stateline house is still in the scaffolding, and the footprint question sits in front of the FTC and every state gaming board that licenses Caesars.

What Opened at Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe

By December 2025 the first tower was done. Sunset Tower rooms got new bathrooms, designer furniture, and heating and cooling a guest can set in each unit, a basic fix on a mountain property that used to leave people at the mercy of a shared system. Public rooms came back in the same wave.

THE ROOMS THAT ARE TAKING GUESTS

Sides used the December reopen to sell comfort more than spectacle. He talked about renewed rooms, the Oyster Bar’s return, and a house that “celebrates the spirit of Tahoe.” Regulars on X had already written the Hard Rock-era building off; one visitor said it was “about time,” and another said they had skipped it on their last trip. The overdue work was the point, not a new brand story.

Saltgrass Came First, Mastro’s Set the Price

The restaurant Sides promised first is serving. The property’s own page lists Saltgrass breakfast through dinner, with Monday to Thursday hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday to 10 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Prime rib runs Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. The No Bull Lounge and a patio aimed at the Desolation Wilderness peaks are part of the pitch, and the official account spent late 2025 pushing that patio and those prime rib nights. A diner posting from the room called the meal “absolutely incredible.”

Architects at Shive-Hattery, hired by Fertitta Entertainment for the rebrand, described a larger outdoor Saltgrass patio off the south casino door, with a new exterior bar and fire pits meant to read from Highway 50. That patio work is the kind of extra pass still sitting over an already open restaurant, which is why a September 2026 market survey could still talk about Saltgrass updates while the dining room was taking breakfast orders.

Mastro’s is the expensive half of the same Landry’s toolkit. The steakhouse opened to the public on May 14, 2026, after a VIP party the night before, as the brand’s 25th location and its first in the Sierra. Sides called it “a natural addition” for a market that sells elevated nights. The Mastro’s listing for Lake Tahoe marks the room open and posts dinner-only hours.

WHAT MASTRO’S PUTS ON THE TABLE

• The cuts: Sixteen USDA Prime steaks, plus Japanese A5 Wagyu and True A5 Kobe from Hyogo.
• The show plate: A two-foot seafood tower, lobster mashed potatoes, and the warm butter cake.
• The clock: Mastro’s Lake Tahoe dinner hours run 5 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Monday, and Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
• The door rules: No lunch, no happy hour, an upscale dress code, valet at $30, and self-park validation with a $50 spend.

You do not have to sleep in the hotel to book a table. That is how Fertitta uses food: the steakhouse is a walk-in magnet for a 539-room house that cannot out-room the Caesars complex up the street.

Heavenly Tower Now Runs Into 2027

The remaining structural work is the taller bedroom stack. Shive-Hattery’s project file says the two towers total more than 500 rooms and bookend the pool, and that Sunset Tower has 200 plus rooms, including ground-floor cabana suites with private patios onto the deck. Heavenly Tower holds 300 plus rooms in mixed suite layouts. The published hotel count is 539. Both stacks were drawn for new HVAC, new bathrooms, and new furniture.

THE TWO TOWERS ON THE PLANS

• Sunset Tower: 200-plus rooms, finished December 2025, pool-cabana suites on the ground floor.
• Heavenly Tower: 300-plus rooms, some already redone, full wrap scheduled for spring 2027.
• Presidential suite: 1,900 square feet, plus three hospitality suites for groups.
• Hotel total: 539 rooms on about 24 acres.

Guests who stayed in the new Sunset rooms in June 2026 still said Heavenly had the better lake views. That is the tower Fertitta has not finished. The pool file is equally unfinished in public: Shive-Hattery drew a rebuilt deck with a heated pool and bar, cabanas, daybeds, and a hot-tub cluster built for year-round use. Sides has not announced that deck as done.

On September 18, 2026, Sides said the company does not run one playbook across its hotels. The Tahoe brief, he said, was to match the destination and still feel like a Golden Nugget. He also pointed at Tahoe Blue Event Center across the street as a reason to believe in South Shore traffic. The second tower is now timed to the 2027 ski-to-spring window, not the early 2026 date he gave the board.

A Fifth Name on a Tired Stateline House

The building opened in the 1960s as Sahara Tahoe. It has since been High Sierra, Lake Tahoe Horizon, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, and Golden Nugget. Hard Rock arrived in 2015 after Paragon licensed the name from the Seminole Tribe of Florida and spent on a music-themed redo. When Fertitta took over, the memorabilia went back to Hard Rock.

THE NAMES ON HIGHWAY 50

• Sahara Tahoe: Original 1960s hotel-casino on the California line.
• High Sierra: Second brand after the Sahara era.
• Lake Tahoe Horizon: The long middle stretch before the music rebrand.
• Hard Rock Lake Tahoe: 2015 to 2023, Paragon operating under a Seminole license.
• Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe: Fertitta name from August 2023, still being built out.

Krolicki told fellow commissioners that every version of the house for 35 years had been a bit tired and needed help. Fertitta’s answer is not another licensed music hall. It is Landry’s restaurants, a sportsbook with slots in the bar, and in-room thermostats. The bet is that steak and HVAC hold a seasonal mountain casino better than guitar-shaped memorabilia did.

Three of Four Casinos Would Sit Under One Owner

Shareholders of Caesars Entertainment voted on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Eldorado Resort in Reno to take the company private under Fertitta Gaming Holdco. A Wednesday SEC filing recorded 133,313,001 votes for, 4,276,986 against, and 5,687,952 abstentions. That yes pile was 65.4% of the 203,780,124 shares outstanding on the August 21 record date. Holders of 143,277,939 shares, or 70.3%, were present or represented.

The price is $31 a share in cash. Fertitta’s side puts up about $5.7 billion in equity and would assume about $11.9 billion of Caesars debt, a package valued at $17.6 billion. If the deal is not done by June 26, 2027, holders are due an extra $0.007150 a share for each day starting July 1, 2027, until closing.

WHAT WE KNOW

• The Tahoe overlap: A combined company would control Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, and Caesars Republic.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

• A close date: Neither company has set one; the merger paper runs to June 26, 2027, before the extra daily fee starts.
• The three-house question: Nevada gaming still has to decide whether one owner keeps all three Stateline licenses.
• What happens to Bally’s neighbors: The fourth Stateline casino is outside the deal, and no spin-off plan has been filed.

Fertitta already owns the smallest of the four. The $17.6 billion vote is how he would pick up the two large ones that share an internal connector and, together, nearly 1,250 rooms. Golden Nugget’s unfinished tower is no longer just a local construction lag. It is the working model on a strip he has asked regulators to let him dominate.

The Strip’s $200 Million Neighbor Already Reopened

Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe, the former Harveys, finished a $200 million redo and held its grand opening in early July 2026. Caesars had first talked about $160 million, then raised the figure as phase two landed. Karie Hall, senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s and Caesars Republic, said the point was a more modern resort that still felt tied to the lake. She also said the money going into South Shore properties is raising the bar for the whole town.

Republic’s new stack includes Wolf by Vanderpump and Northern Nevada’s first Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen, plus a rebuilt casino floor, a pool-and-lounge deck, and 25,000 square feet of meeting space. It sits a few minutes up the same Stateline casino row as Golden Nugget. Hall runs both Caesars houses as one connected product. Fertitta’s 539-room Nugget is the independent in that lineup only until a closing, if a closing comes.

Some of Heavenly Tower’s renovated rooms are already open. The 1,900-square-foot presidential suite is not. Nevada’s gaming board still has to decide whether the man finishing that tower also gets to own the two larger casinos up the street.
